Gut Health
The area we refer to as the gut is the part of the body that breaks down the food we eat into the proper components needed for the body to function properly. Everything from skin health to mental health, energy, and hormone balance, as well as toxin and waste elimination, require certain nutrients to function properly.
Most people don’t realize that over 70% of our immune system is housed in the gut, making our digestive health even that much more important for daily function and overall well-being. This little known fact explains the gut/brain/immune system connection succinctly and demonstrates why gut health should be near the very top of the list when it comes to daily habits and overall health.
Healthy Habits to Improve Gut Health

Having your poop on a regular and consistent schedule is one important key factor in gut health. If you end up finding your schedule getting off, the culprit could be constipation. There are numerous causes of constipation, including low fiber, thyroid issues, and even dehydration. At the top of the list, though, is usually dietary issues.
- Make sure you are getting enough water and keeping your body well hydrated. It is also important to include a variety of fruits and vegetables in your daily diet intake. Processed foods need to be completely cut out as they are a direct cause of inflammation in the lining of the GI tract, which is the main area where digestive food is absorbed. In many cases, your digestive tract, not recognizing processed food as digestible, will attack it, causing inflammation, which will inevitably lead to disease.
- Eating mostly whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and unprocessed meats will instantly lower the stress on your gut and your body’s overall inflammatory responses.
- When it comes to gluten, the rule of thumb is less is more. For many people, it cannot be tolerated at all. Gluten is a direct cause of leaky gut, which causes particles of undigested food and waste plus things like bacteria to pass through the lining of the intestine, which will get into your bloodstream and cause overall inflammation and illness.
- Garlic, asparagus, bananas, legumes, and the like are considered prebiotics and play a different role than probiotics. These nutrients feed the good bacteria in your gut and stop the effects of altered gut flora.
- Foods like kimchi, miso, tempeh, and sauerkraut have live cultures that are considered probiotics that help your gut break down food and improve your immune system. It is important that your gut has a steady flow of these probiotics at all times.
- Poor sleep has a direct effect on your overall gut health. Cortisol, the stress hormone, is dramatically reduced during regular sleep, thus allowing the gut to repair itself. When cortisol levels are high, the gut stays out of repair mode and only focuses on maintaining the status quo.
- The first key to gut health actually begins when you are chewing your food. Taking the time to thoroughly chew your food ignites the digestive enzymes needed to break down the food properly once it reaches the gut. The increased levels of saliva also signal the gut that it’s time to begin processing this food.

Complete Your Routine
Because our bodies produce a matrix of hormones, neurotransmitters, as well as numerous body processes throughout that day, optimal health is best achieved when all of these factors remain in good balance with one another. Certain food supplements in addition to your diet can help encourage the body to balance these factors which can indirectly lead to a better, more restful night’s sleep. With changes in our dietary intake in the last few centuries, many necessary nutrients are easily left out of our food intake which is where supplements can help ‘take up the slack’.
Despite the advancements in dietary supplements in the last few years, unfortunately, there are still many less than reputable companies bottling up supplements that are less than effective and some that can even be counterproductive. The most important factors are that your supplements are pure, with no binders or fillers, and are produced in a fashion that allows the body to easily assimilate them for the best effect.
